WILD SWIMMING IN THE SEVEN BAYS

Explore the best tidal pools and wild swimming spots around Cornwall's Seven Bays. Tips on cold-water dips near Padstow and where to warm up afterwards.

Treyarnon Bay Tidal Pool

Carved into the rocky ledge on the bay's northern side, the Treyarnon Tidal Pool is a premier wild swimming spot. Refreshed completely by each high tide, the receding sea leaves a deep, crystal-clear natural pool protected from Atlantic swells. Perfect for a calm, saltwater dip or a rock jump.

Trevone Natural Pool

Trevone Natural Pool is a hidden gem for wild swimmers. Hand-enlarged in the Victorian era, this deep, crystal-clear sea pool emerges at mid-to-low tide to offer a sheltered, glassy oasis fully protected from the surf ideal for doing calm saltwater laps while taking in views out toward Quies rocks.

Porthcothan Cove – The Horse Pool

The Horse Pool is a wild, adrenaline-filled plunge spot for experienced swimmers. This deep, narrow tidal gouge carved straight into the cliffside fills with glassy, turquoise saltwater at low tide creating a striking natural swimming channel where daring locals jump from the towering slate walls into the cool depths below.

Cold-Water Safety Tips for Year-Round Dips

  • Enter Slowly: Walk in gradually to control cold water shock; never dive in. Focus on slow, steady exhales until your breathing settles.

  • Check Tides & Swell: Always check tide times before heading out. Tidal pools quickly become dangerous open sea as the tide comes in and waves begin to break over the rocks.

  • Know Rip Currents: If caught in a rip, don't fight it by swimming straight to shore. Swim parallel to the beach until you're out of the pull, then head back in. Float to live if you get tired.

  • Be Aware of Entry & Exit Points: Tidal pools and rocky coves get extremely slippery with seaweed. Plan exactly how and where you will climb out before getting into the water.

  • Stay Visible: Always use a bright tow float and swim with a buddy. Open ocean swells can easily hide a solo swimmer from view.

The Ultimate Post-Swim Warm-Up Routine

  • Warm Up at the Beach Sauna: Pop into the wood-fired beach saunas at Harlyn or Trevone for a gentle session to take the edge off the cold and ease your core temperature back up.

  • Sip Something Hot: Grab a hot drink and a sweet treat from the beach cafe to combat after-chill and warm up from the inside out.
